Dropdown remember selected choice

Hi,

I struggle to find a solution on how to remember the choice made in a dropdown.

The dropdown pulls the choices from a SP list column "segment 3 takt - vingenummer"

i want the choices made in the dropdown to be remembered, so when i refresh/restart the app, it kinda starts where you left it. 
the choice is not beeing saved by a form or a gallery, since it just there to show the current status process being worked on, so its for illustrating purpose only. 

for now i can make it work by just setting the items property to: Choices('Segment 3 Takt - Vingenumre'.Vingenummer1) 

but then all of them will reset to the default choice after restarting the app, i does not save the choice.

what would be the smartest workaround to get this working? i have read a bit about saving the data (the coice) within the app with the "savedata" function - but i did not get any further.

Hi @Snow_89 ,

Firstly SaveData only works on mobile devices, so unless you are using the app on these, it is not an option.

Other than that, you have to save the data somewhere - I would suggest a one-record SharePoint list and then simply do a LookUp at App OnStart to set a Variable to the value, which you could then use as the Default of the control.

Do you want the Dropdown to keep the selected value when you reopen the app?

Could you please share a bit more about the scenario?

Actually, if you want to keep the Droddown selected without saving it to the data source, I am afraid that there is no way to achieve this within PowerApps currently. Even the collection will be reset to empty when you reopen the app.

As an alternative solution, you could consider the SaveData() and LoadData(). The reason why you did not get any further using the SaveData function is that you may not save the app first and open it on a device. 

Open your app on a device such as a phone or tablet. SaveData and LoadData can't be used in Studio or in a web browser. Refresh your app list if you don't see your app immediately, it can take a few seconds for the app to appear on your device.

1). Set the OnSelet property of the Dropdown as below:

ClearCollect( MyItems, { Choice:Dropdown1.Selected} )

2). Add a button for SaveData() and set the OnSelect:

SaveData( MyItems, "LocalSavedItems" )

But you'll only see an error as you're authoring in a web browser. Save the app first and open on a device before you follow the next steps to test this formula.

3). Set the OnStart property of the App:

LoadData( MyItems, "LocalSavedItems" )

4). Set the Default property of the Dropdown:

First(MyItems).Choice

1. Select the Save Data button. This will save the data in your collection to your local device.

2. Close the app. Your collection in memory will be lost including all item names and pictures, but they'll still be there in the device's storage.

3. Launch the app again. The choice in memory will show in the Dropdown.

The app will be used in a web browser, so i guess the "savedata" and "loaddata" wont work. 

what do you suggest as the best option for the above requirement? 

actually, its just a dropdown that should remember the selected choice until changed, the choices is pulled from a sharepoint list column.
is it really necessary with a form that submits the changes to a sharepoint list`?

Since the app will work in a browser, i guess your suggestions might come in handy - i am still pretty new to powerapps, could you maybe help explain how i set it up with your solution?

Hi @Snow_89,

Combine with your need, I think it is so necessary for you to create an SP list to store the Dropdown selected value.

Create a Choice field and generate an app based on the SP list directly as below.

Then you could have an automatically generated app with three screens:

BrowseScreen including a BrowseGallery1 to display all the records

DetailScreen including a DetailForm1 to view all the records using a form

EditScreen including an EditForm1 to create/edit records

Go to the EditScreen and set the DefaultSelectedItems property of the Combo Box corresponding to the 'Vingenummer 1' as below:

ThisItem.'Vingenummer 1'

In addition, you could create a blank app connecting to the SP list. Add a Gallery and insert a Dropdown, set the Items of the Dropdown as below:

Choices('Segment 3 Takt - Vingenumre'.'Vingenummer 1')

Set the Default property of the Dropdown as below:

ThisItem.'Vingenummer 1'.Value
