Loading spinner for Gallery

Hi all,

Here's some background info for the app I'm building;

The app is accessible company wide, meaning everyone can access it.

The datasource behind this app is a SharePoint list having over 30K items (Distribution Lists).

The app does show ALL Distribution Lists owned by the person who's using PowerApp, that said my Gallery Items are set to: Filter(DATASOURCE, OwnerEmail=User().Email).

This way the Gallery should only show the DL's of the person who's using the PowerApp. It will never show more than 100 results as we don't have users in our company owning more than 100 DL's. For most people it should show less than 10 results.

All this is working fine, the thing I'm struggling with is the following:

It does take some time for the app to show the DL's in the Gallery (about 8 seconds). During this time I'd like to show a loadingspinner. I can do that using a loading spinner.gif and set it's visible value to: CountRows(DLGallery.AllItems) = 0

The problem is, some people don't own any DL's. When they access the app, they will see this loading spinner forever because it won't load data for them (rows will be 0). For users that don't own data, I'd like to add a message saying "you don't any DL's, etc.". I can achieve that by configuring the "visible" value of this message to: CountRows(DLGallery.AllItems) = 0. The problem with this is, this message is instantly shown even though it is still loading data for the people that do own DL's.

So basically this is my request:

The app should show a loading spinner in the Gallery for about 8 seconds. Then it should either show the DL's that person owns, or display a message that they don't own any and hide the load spinner.

And these are the two issues I'm dealing with:

1. The loading spinner will spin forever for people that don't own any DL (Gallery items = 0).

2. The message "You don't any DL's" is shown instantly even though the Gallery is still loading items for the people that do own DL's.

What should I do to fix this?

Thanks much in advance!

-Wes

This doesn't work for me. I updated the DATASOURCE to my SharePointList the PowerApp connects to, but I'm getting a "there is an error in the formula".

I however have achieved what I want by using a more complex method. This work for me, but I'm pretty sure there should be a better way of doing this.

Also, people with a slow internet connection where the powerapp loads for longer than 10 seconds will have a different experience. It'll tell them they don't own any DL's while the gallery might still be loading.

This is what I currently have:

  • A timer with a 10 seconds duration that auto-start
  • The spinner Visible set to: IsEmpty(DLGallery.AllItems) && TimerGalleryLoad.Value < 10000
  • The "No DLs found message" with Visible property: IsEmpty(DLGallery.AllItems) && TimerGalleryLoad.Value > 9999

For people not owning any DL's, it will show the spinner for 10 seconds and then tell them they don't own any DL's.

For users owning DL's, they will see the spinner until the Gallery loads their info (which should take less than 10 seconds).

Hi @WesleyE ,

Try this on the Visible of the spinner

CountRows(
   Filter(
      DATASOURCE,
      OwnerEmail = User().Email
   )
) > 0 &&
CountRows(DLGallery.AllItems) = 0

Hi @WesleyE ,

That formula was just missing a bracket (now fixed), however you are doing things with workarounds that I am sure the Power Apps designers never had in mind to do. The other option is the LoadingSpinner property of the screen, which you can set to Data .

Thanks for your help!

I do get a delegation warning because of the dataset which seems too large, so I'm not sure if I should be using this in my case.

I did enable the default Loadingspinner.Data as well, but it doesn't work well.

It only shows up for a split second and then disappears. DelayItemLoading is set to True too. That's why I ended up with the custom made .gif loading spinner and the timer, etc.

I think for now I'll stick to the workaround I've used, which seems to work fine. I just thought there would be a better/easier way of doing this 🙂

Hi @WesleyE
I understand your issue, you want to show the spinner when the data is loading in the gallery. Try the below code!
IsBlank(galleryName.allItems) in spinner visible property. If you face any issue kindly reach me out here. I will help you to solve your issue...

If this solution is helped you means kindly accept this solution it will help other people to easily identify the correct answer.

Glad to help you more...

Thank you,

Some people do not have data so their Gallery will always be empty.

I think using your code the spinner will continue to spin. I have marked my own post as a solution as I think what I currently have works best:

  • A timer with a 10 seconds duration that auto-start
  • The spinner Visible set to: IsEmpty(DLGallery.AllItems) && TimerGalleryLoad.Value < 10000
  • The "No DLs found message" with Visible property: IsEmpty(DLGallery.AllItems) && TimerGalleryLoad.Value > 9999

This thread is kinda old, I forgot to mark my post as solution but you can consider this resolved. Thanks!
