Selecting first window with multiple open

After having great success with my last post, I'm now back with another question that I cannot seem to find an answer to, or if it even matters.

With our EMR, I often have multiple windows open since while I'm working on one patient, I may need to access another patient's profile (scheduling, updating information, etc). How can I make sure that PAD always selects the first window, which is the window I reserve for uploading documents into the patient's chart? If I have 6 windows open, all with the same title, process, etc, I only want it to select window 1 and go from there.

Is this possible?

Thanks!

Here you go.

When a window is first active, use "Get Window" action to capture the window "handle".  The window handle is a unique identifier for every window open, and you can name the variable whatever you want.

When you want to get back to the window later, use "Focus Window" by window instance/handle

Best of luck!

I assume the EMR application is a windows gui program ?  (and not a web app).

If windows app, capture the UI element for the 1st window and 2nd window, and then paste the selectors for both windows here .

Well, therein lies the problem. It IS an application, but each window selected does not have any unique identifiers. Both return:

:desktop > window[Name="Window Name Redacted"][Process="WebMed"]

Unless I'm doing something wrong here in collecting the information. I went to 'Add UI Element', moved the box to select the entire window, and Ctrl+Left click to add it.

The names are identical. Am I missing something?

Appreciate confidentiality but are these both identical ? cant tell for obvious reasons.

Theres got to be some difference no matter how miniscule 🤔

that is a problem with them being the same.

... chances are that your EMR program has a toolbar icon, a click menu item to bring each specific window in focus to work on.

Or, a shortcut key to bring 1st, or 2nd, etc window in focus.

Suggest you check the program's help function and search for shortcut keys like that.

Did you find anything like above?

Unfortunately, there is zero differences in the name. Every one of them is the name of the practice and then my initials. If I switch screens (for example, go to 'Documents'), it prepends 'Documents' to the name, but I cannot rely on that because I could have documents opened in several of them.

There is no shortcut key to switch between the windows. Some additional information that I didn't think to mention before: When I log in, I can choose how many instances of a window I want. I usually choose 6 because I go through 6 different screens. To its credit, PAD seems to go to the last window I had used, so I suppose as long as I make it the last window of the series accessed, it should continue to work. I am not sure what to make of that, though.

If you are simply switching between two windows, you should be able to:

Send Keys {Alt}({Tab}).  This will always switch to the last focused window.  So, If I am in Excel and some other program, I can use this to bounce back and forth.

I wouldn't have an issue with that solution itself, but it's not always switching between the two windows. If I get a call from a patient after I've downloaded a document but haven't uploaded it yet, I go to one of the other screens to deal with the patient. I sorely wish these windows all had unique identifiers in some place, but if it exists, I simply cannot find it.

Wait, are you saying that each of the multiple windows has different titles (which is Name of the Practice) in its Title bar of the windows ?
If yes, then you can use a Focus window action to focus on the window of title of a specific practice name tile window.

and are the initials the initials of the patient ?

Regarding different titles, it is ONLY when I access a different screen, then it may prepend something. So, if I have three windows open to the same location (even on different patients), the title will be the exact same. For example, if I have documents opened for John Smith and documents opened for Jane Doe, the title may read: "Documents My Practice Name AA" for both windows. No other discerning property. Honestly, I wish the program appended the current record number so that I could have it just look for that and avoid any potential mistakes.

The initials are my initials only.

Unfortunately not everything can be automated, by PAD.

We dont want the wrong person losing a testical because it mixed up the window 😁

Actually............

There are 3rd party extensions for Chrome etc where you can rename tabs but as this isnt a web app, maybe there are others ?

@arcylix
1. What happens if you create a UI Selector on the element of the windows form (the field) that displays the patient's name.

2.  Edit that UI selector as a Custom selector and change in the selector the hard coded patient name literal to a PAD variable.

3.  Assign  the Ui Selector to a  Click UI  Element action.

4. Set the variable to patient name, just before executing the Click UI element action.
.... Does the Click UI element cause the window of that patient to now snap into focus as the current foreground focused window ?

Here you go.

When a window is first active, use "Get Window" action to capture the window "handle".  The window handle is a unique identifier for every window open, and you can name the variable whatever you want.
