Help with building a request calendar using sharepoint

Hi,

I am trying to build a "request a car calendar" app using canvas and after some review I thought it was best to connect to a sharepoint calendar, that way I wouldn't need to store or pull any old data.  Additionally I have seen some of the calendar apps suggested online on powerapps that does not offer calendars that show multiple events on each square (day).   I am trying to gauge the community to see if I am going this the right way.  So we will have multiple cars that can be booked at any given time.  And the user would need to go in the app to first see if the car is available for that date, then book it if it is available, or change the date if necessary.

Since sharepoint has calendars, would it just be simpler for users to access the sharepoint calendar instead?  However, it would require an admin to approve/deny.  Unless there is some auto logic that can be built into a sharepoint calendar?  In that sense, would it be a good idea to have the powerapp do the logic while connecting to sharepoint?  Thank You.

@Anonymous ,

Thanks for your help!

@rebeccas ,

Just curious, for your popups, did you just added a rectangular icon and a gallery onto it manually?  I'm not too sure there is a popup control or function in PA.  If done like this manually, I suppose it would not be possible to dynamically pop up the window at different x,y locations each time so it won't block the date that I clicked from.  Or can we?

I build my pop-up and then group it all together.

Mine has:

* one box that covers the whole screen that has some transparency to it

* one box that just has a white background and outline that goes behind the gallery and label

* a label at top that says what it is

* the gallery

* and an X icon that allows them to shrink it back down.

You can set variables that change the X and Y location ..I've used that once before but not sure how you would on this. For mine they were clicking on various places in the screen and my pop up showed in different spots based on that but it was still SET places in the screen...not inside a gallery. I'll let you know if I think of anything but right now nothing is coming to mind on making that work for your scenario.

When it is a set object they select it has an X and Y so there is something to compare to but inside a gallery doesn't.

@rebeccas ,

Thanks for the lead.  I'll try to figure something out with dynamic popup locations but it probably isn't a deal breaker to just statically load in the middle of the screen.

@rebeccas ,

Sorry to keep bugging you.  I created my popup window but i am getting a weird experience with it.  I am not able to change the  text font color in the label control, and i am unable to click on the close button to close the popup.  The popup worked before.  I added a second button just to test it out and i was able to click on it, but once i grouped it with the popup group, it stopped working again.  Just wondering if you have seen these anomolies before.

I also find that when the popup window visibility is set to false, I'm unable to click on any area on the calendar that the popup window covers (when its invisible as in closed).  Is there a way to disable the popup by default and enable when I click on the date?  Thanks.

When it is grouped it can be tricky clicking on it. You will have to select the label or anything that is inside the group over on the left side from your tree view. It doesn't have to be grouped to work or anything...that is just more a personal preference of mine.

Any time you use a "pop-up" you need to make sure to include it on the screens OnVisible - set the property to false then so that it is always hidden when the screen first appears.

@UC3378

I posted a short video this morning on variations of the calendar view I have used. These are ones that are still in the works but just shows a few different design ideas if you want to check it out:

https://youtu.be/5oKHN57W_i8

@rebeccas ,

I got it working.  Turns out the group's visible property had to be set as well.  I did not, so even though the visible property of the controls within the group were set, the invisible group shape was blocking me from clicking on the dates beneath it.

I was not able to click on the close button, because it turns out the button had to be in a specific order (above the rectangle window) within the group.

And the Label text was a funky one.  I was testing around, and it somehow did not like what I had in the gallery item property.  But weird enough, I recreated a second popup window with the same controls, and typed instead of copying and pasting the same Filter formula.  This time it allows me to change the text color within the label.  I notice these funky little bugs in PA sometimes if that is indeed what it is.  Thanks for your help as always!

@rebeccas ,

Just saw your video.  Awesome work!

I will definitely be revisiting it as i progress with mine.  I see your pop ups can produce additional pop ups.  Are you just doing the same thing with them as well?  I really like how you have the subgallery calendar events within the dates.  That is what I am trying to do here myself.  I will try to see if I can include events from multiple calendar overlays from within the same sharepoint calendar.  Have you tried that yet?

Thanks...I'm a big fan of the Pop-ups and yes...just follows same rules as you go on those.

I haven't tried doing multiple onto one but I might have a need for that soon. I'm thinking to do that I will combine the sources into one using a collection on the screens load...that is what I typically do to combine data but I will know better when I get to that point. Give you a shout when I do if I discover anything I think is worth mentioning. 🙂
