If required fields are not complete in required format, do not save form

Hello,

I have four mandatory fields: First Name, Last Name, Phone Number, Email Address. They are all textinput fields and are required. I would like my phone number to be formatted as (XXX) XXX-XXXX which I have done by creating an input mask. If there are not exactly 10 numbers, I want there to be an error. I currently have this set up by:

PhoneNumber

OnSelect: IsMatch(ti_phone.Text,"[0-9]{10}"

I want my email address to also include an @ sign and .com which I have set up by:

OnSelect: IsMatch(ti_email.Text, Match.Email)

While these work well in the preview view, I am still able to submit incorrect email addresses and phone numbers into my sharepoint list. Therefore, I believe that I need to make a change to the OnSave on the SharePointIntegration but I am not sure what it should be. I have tried:

OnSave: If('First Name_DataCard1'.Valid & 'Last Name_DataCard1'.Valid & Email_DataCard1.Valid & 'Phone #_DataCard1'.Valid,SubmitForm(OnboardingInfoForm),!SubmitForm(OnboardingInfoForm))

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you,

Very good...then change your Update property to the following:

If(IsMatch(ti_phone.Text, "^\(\d{3}\) \d{3}-\d{4}$"),
    ti_phone.Text,
    Blank()
)

@Masonf2265

First, you have not replied on your prior post if you are trying to validate entry of a phone number with "("'s and ")"'s and "-"'s to contain 10 Digits, or if you are only allowing people to enter in 10 numbers.

You are putting IsMatch formulas on the OnSelect actions of something...but this is not going to provide anything for you as these formulas you have return true or false, but OnSelect is a behavioral action - it neither returns or sets anything.

Next, you are checking the Valid property of a datacard in your OnSave.  The only thing that makes a Datacard valid is if it is not required (datacard Required set to true), then it is valid.  If it is required, then if the Update property returns a value, then it is valid.  If the Update property does not return a value, then it is not valid.

So what are you doing in your datacard to impact the Valid state?

@RandyHayes

First, I would like users just to enter 10 numbers for the phone number category. However, if it is easier to do the “(“ && Digit Digit Digit && “)” way then I can change it.

Second, I used to have the OnsSelect be If(IsMatch(Ti_phone.Text, “[0-9]{10}”) ,

Notify(“Valid Phone Number”,Success);

Notify(“Invalid Phone Number. Try Again.”,Error))

I removed the notifications because ultimately I just want the form to not submit if there are errors.

What you are saying about the Valid argument makes sense. Does this mean I need to change the Update part? If so, what should I update it to?

Thank you!!!

@Masonf2265

Okay...sounds good.

So the trick with Valid is this.

If you have a datacard that is Required (set the Required to true - or required from the datasource), then in the Update property, pull the carpet out from underneath the Update.

What that means is this.

Let's say your Update property of a Datacard is: DataCardValue1.Text

And you want to validate that to only be 10 digits (no other characters allowed), then use this formula in the Update:

If(IsMatch(DataCardValue1.Text, "\d{10}"),
    DataCardValue1.Text,
    Blank()
)

What this does is, if the text in the control is in the format you want (as determined by the IsMatch for 10 digits in this case), then the value of the Update property will be the value of the TextInput control.  If it is NOT a match, then the Update property will be blank.

Since the Required property of the DataCard is true, if the Update property is Blank (due to the invalid format), then the Valid property of the Datacard (and the entire form) will be false.

Once a valid format is given in the Textinput, then the Update will have a value (which is all that the Valid cares about), so Valid will be true.

SO, in your case of the Phone number, the Update property would be:

If(IsMatch(ti_phone.Text, "\d{10}"),
    ti_phone.Text,
    Blank()
)

And your Email field Update Property would be:

If(IsMatch(ti_email.Text, Match.Email),
    ti_email.Text,
    Blank()
)

And finally, the OnSave action would be:

If(OnboardingInfoForm.Valid,
    SubmitForm(OnboardingInfoForm)
)

(By the way, there is no such thing as !SubmitForm that you had in your original formula.  SubmitForm returns no value, so there is no need to NOT it)

Hi @RandyHayes ,

Thank you SO  much for this thorough explanation on what I need to change. All works great except for the phone number part. You mention in your first comment that the "OnSelect" and IsMatch does not set or update anything because it is a behavioral action. Because of this, should I change my OnSelects to False? Currently, my OnSelects are as follows:

ti_Phone

OnSelect: IsMatch(ti_phone.Text, "[0-9]{10}")

ti_Email

OnSelect: IsMatch(ti_email.Text,Match.Email)

Following your suggestions above, everything works great except for the phone number part. Right now, whenever I type in just a 10 digit phone number, it says it is not in the correct format which does not allow me to save it (which is what I want!) However, I am entering the 10 digit number, which is correct, but it still will  not let me save it.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you,

@Masonf2265

Actually, your OnSelect actions don't really do anything anyway.  IsMatch returns true or false and you're not assigning or using the result value anyway.  But to clear it out, you can just remove the formula or set it to false.  It doesn't make a difference.

I'm not clear on your phone number still.  Are you looking for users to ONLY enter digits 0-9 (and there must be 10) or are you allowing other characters like (, ) and - ?

Hi Randy,

 Right now I am looking for users to ONLY enter digits 0-9 for the phone number. I have an inputmask overlayed so it will change the 10 digits into (123) 456-7890. I did this by setting the phone number OnChange to:

Set(formattedNumber, Text(Value(ti_phone1.Text), "[$-en-US](###) ###-####")) and the Default as "formattedNumber".

@Masonf2265

Ah, so the reality is, the ti_phone1.Text is going to have the special characters in it!

Before I mention what to do...what are you storing (or want to store), only 10 digits or the phone number as formatted in the text input control?
