Network Error When Using Patch Function

Good day Powerapps Community!

I have a strange situation with one of my Apps.

I have an App that has been live for a while and working fine.

Today one of my users started to experience a strange error "Network Error When Using Patch Function. The requested operation is invalid' when trying to patch a collection to a sharepoint list.

My app is based on this repeating table video from Shane Young - PowerApps Repeating Tables like InfoPath Part 1 - Enter the data - YouTube

The weird thing is that myself and other users are able to use the app and patch data no issue. I have checked and the user in question has read and write permissions on the sharepoint list. (He is actually the owner of the site).

I think I have traced the issue to the "on success" property of my form:

ForAll(ECNCollection, If(!IsBlank(Refdes)Or!IsBlank(Topn), Patch('ECN History', Defaults('ECN History'),{Title:ECNForm_1.LastSubmit.Title, field_2:Refdes, field_3:Frompn, field_4:Topn, field_5:Changedesc,field_6:ECNForm_1.LastSubmit.'New Altium Release', field_7:ECNForm_1.LastSubmit.Date, field_8:Altpart, field_1:ECNForm_1.LastSubmit.ECNID})));Refresh('ECN History');NewForm(ECNForm_1);Navigate('Generate PDF',None)

It is also worth mentioning that this past weekend I put in some time to convert the data source's for this app from excel one drive to a sharepoint lists as I believed it to be more reliable. I think this has caused my issue, but I have no idea how as other users can still use the app.

Any ideas?

Hi @johanhaasbroek ,

Firstly, I have a blog on the With() statement that may interest you. The other thing about the code is that if you are only using the variables on this screen and the ones in the bottom code in that code, you can do this

UpdateContext(
   {
      varImplementnow2: DataCardValue9.Selected.Value,
      VarStencil2: DataCardValue13.Selected.Value,
	  varECN2:
      Last(
         Split(
            DataCardValue4.Text,
            "/"
         ).Result
      ),
      VarComments2: DataCardValue11.Text
   }
);
SubmitForm(ECNForm_1);
With(
   {
      wID:
	  LookUp(
         'Products Master',
          Title = varProduct2
      ).ID,
      wPCBRev2: DataCardValue4.Text,
      varAltiumVer2: DataCardValue5.Text
   },
   Patch(
      'Products Master',
      {ID: wID},
      {
         field_6: wAltiumVer2,
         field_5: wPCBRev2
      }
   )
)

however that is not the cause of your issue. As I mentioned in the previous post, have you tried sharing the list directly with User X (not in the Group) in SharePoint. I have one user (out of about 200) I needed to do that with for some reason.

Hi @johanhaasbroek ,

I am not sure why a particular user cannot use a Patch other than permission issues, however try the below for your Patch - you will find it much quicker

With(
   {wRecord:Self.LastSubmit},
   Patch(
      'ECN History',
      ForAll(
         Filter(
            ECNCollection,
            !IsBlank(Refdes) || !IsBlank(Topn)
         ) As aPatch,
         {
            Title: wRecord.Title,
            field_2: aPatch.Refdes,
            field_3: aPatch.Frompn,
            field_4: aPatch.Topn,
            field_5: aPatch.Changedesc,
            field_6: wRecord.'New Altium Release',
            field_7: wRecord.Date,
            field_8: aPatch.Altpart,
            field_1: wRecord.ECNID
         }
      )
   )
)

Thank you for your reply @WarrenBelz

I have implemented your code and it is much more efficient!

We have tried to remove and readd the user in question to the app and he is still getting the same error. This is very weird and I honestly have no idea how to solve this.

Some additional info:

The button that submits my ECN_Form1 has the following code

Set(VarSpinLoad,true);Concurrent(Set(varImplementnow2,DataCardValue9.Selected.Value),Set(VarStencil2,DataCardValue13.Selected.Value), Set(VarPCBRev2, DataCardValue4),Set(varAltiumVer2,DataCardValue5), Set(VarComments2,DataCardValue11),Set(varECN2,Last(Split(DataCardValue4.Text,"/"))));SubmitForm(ECNForm_1);Patch('Products Master',First(Filter('Products Master',Title=varProduct2)),{field_6:varAltiumVer2.Text, field_5:VarPCBRev2.Text})

This then triggers the "On success" property of the form which I posted the code to earlier.

The weird thing is that the user in question manages to Patch data to "Products Master" from the above code and this works. The error then comes when he is trying to patch to "ECN History", both of these data sources is a sharepoint list in the same environment.

We have also tried logging him out and back in of his account with no luck.

I am honestly stumped and have no idea how to solve this, any ideas would be so highly appreciated.

The app works for all other users. We have also logged into sharepoint and this user can see the list in question and has all the needed permissions, no idea what is going on.

I have seen that one of my column types are "multiple lines of text" could this be the cause? It would be weird since the app works for other users?

Hi @johanhaasbroek ,

Firstly, (over a number of years) every time I have encountered one (or a small number) of users not being able to do what everyone else can, it is always permission related in some way, so the first things I would check is whether they have write (at least Contribute) access to ALL lists connected to the app (particularly ECN History). If you are using Security Groups, try sharing with them directly as well.

You might also get them to sign out (I know you have done this) , clear their browser cache, and sign back in. Also (I may be stating the obvious here, but I have encountered it on mobile devices) , make sure they are actually signed in as themselves (I have "Welcome " & User().FullName on the opening screen of all my apps.

Lastly, a few suggestions on your code - in particular the Variables which are better all initially set to the end text value and also the more specific record patch.

Set(
   VarSpinLoad,
   true
);
Concurrent(
   Set(
      varImplementnow2,
      DataCardValue9.Selected.Value
   ),
   Set(
      VarStencil2,
      DataCardValue13.Selected.Value
   ),
   Set(
      VarPCBRev2,
      DataCardValue4.Text
   ),
   Set(
      varAltiumVer2,
      DataCardValue5.Text
   ),
   Set(
      VarComments2,
      DataCardValue11.Text
   ),
   Set(
      varECN2,
      Last(
         Split(
            DataCardValue4.Text,
            "/"
         ).Result
      )
   )
);
SubmitForm(ECNForm_1);
With(
   {
      wID:
	  LookUp(
         'Products Master',
          Title = varProduct2
      ).ID
   },
   Patch(
      'Products Master',
      {ID: wID},
      {
         field_6: varAltiumVer2,
         field_5: VarPCBRev2
      }
   )
)

Hey , thanks so much for reaching out again, people like you make this forum so awesome.

Thanks for sharing the code improvements, I have implemented it and it works like a dream! Very interesting, I have never used the With() function before, it looks very useful, sort of like a for loop?

Unfortunately we are still struggling. So weird, I have since added new users and theirs work no problem, the issue is definitely with Mr X.

Warren if you could possibly suggest places/settings where I can check the type of permissions that might be blocking him I would really appreciate it. I am new to Sharepoint and can get lost in the settings.

Some additional info:

So we are 14 members part of a private team group called "Production", I have accessed our sharepoint for this private group and have made the lists for my app in there.

I have attached some pictures:

Private Group Members

Mr X can be seen second in this membership list - Owner

Site Permissions

 Advanced Settings

The advanced list settings are identical for "Products Master" which patches successfully as well as "ECN History" which fails.

Why would two lists in the same place react differently just to him?

If you have any ideas where I go from here, I would be very grateful! I can provide any other information that might help you diagnose our problem. There must be a way!

Problem solved!

Warren thank you so much for all your help!

Sharing the list directly with him solved the issue!

Hey @WarrenBelz

You won't believe it, but this exact problem has now resurfaced again with only User X. It is so weird since things were working fine for a while after you helped me last time.

Now all of a sudden we get the same patch error, with the exact same symptoms. Patching to "Products Master" works well, patching to "ECN History" does not work.

I have shared all sharepoint lists with him directly again, and still no luck.

Any idea what we should try next?

User X says he thinks it might have something to do with a windows update. It is very weird that this issue has reoccurred, and even weirder that the solution that worked last time now does not work.

Hi @johanhaasbroek ,

That is (sharing directly) the only thing I have needed to do with weird things like this. Can the user open the 'ECN History' list directly in SharePoint ? Also (this is a bit left-field), but have you tried a different browser ?
