PowerApps Default resets when opening app

I have 2 groups in which it has a variable under Visible and it is dependent on what was selected in the Dropdown.

So whenever what was selected in the Dropdown it would make that 1 group appear while the other group becomes hidden.

Whenever the app starts it is expected for the Dropdown to be selected for what was last selected.

Basically, the dropdown value is not retaining the last selection. I've tried to set a variable in Default under Dropdown but it is not working. 

I just need to find a way for it to retain the last selection whenever the app starts. If I can just make the Default still retain for what was last selected in the dropdown.

PowerApps does not retain any values from session to session.  You would need to store your last selected value in a datasource and then load that value when you start again.

You can also look at using the SaveData and LoadData functions - but they will not work in design mode, only play mode (which is probably more what you want anyway!)

Well that depends. SaveData and LoadData functions have a lot of limitations, it was designed in mind to handle simple offline capabilities. So it all depends how the application is designed and mostly later used. That means there is no clear answer You will have to test if it works for You ...

While Randy's solution will work in any scenario.

Set dropdown default property to variable

varSelection

Set dropdown on change property to gather collection data  and save it for later:

ClearCollect(colSelection;Dropdown1.Selected.Value);;SaveData(colSelection;"ddSelector")

Set OnStart property of the application to read data back in:

LoadData(colSelection;"ddSelector");;Set(varSelection;First(colSelection.Value).Value)

I've tried this and nothing is happening. It is not setting the variable based on what was selected OnStart.

I'm not sure if it is related but this is the OnSelect formula of the button based on the Dropdown:

Depending on what was selected, it will make the variable set to true, and so on.
