Yes, it's possible to connect to SQL Server Express Edition.
You'll need to select the on-premises gateway option, rather than the 'Cloud Services' option. We use the cloud option to connect to SQL Azure.
You'll need to install the on-premises gateway on a machine in your local network. There shouldn't be any antivirus/firewall rules that block connectivity between the gateway and the SQL Server. For the 'SQL Server name', you'll need to specify the instance name (for example MyServer\SQLExpress). You should also make sure that the SQL Server Browser service is running on the machine with SQL Express.

Does the SQL Server Express Editon exist on your local PC or Azure Cloud?
If the SQL Server Express Editon exists on your local PC, I think there is something wrong with your Operation. When you connect to On-premises SQL Server, you need to choose "Connect using On-premises data gateway" option:
Note: If you want to connect to On-premise SQL Server from PowerApps, you need to install On-premises data gateway firstly on your PC.

If the SQL Server Express Editon exists on your local PC, I think there is something wrong with your Operation. When you connect to On-premises SQL Server, you need to choose "Connect using On-premises data gateway" option:

We're thrilled to announce that Ahmed Salih is our Super User of the Month for April 2024. Ahmed has been one of our most active Super Users this year--in fact, he kicked off the year in our Community with this great video reminder of why being a Super User has been so important to him! Ahmed is the Senior Power Platform Architect at Saint Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. He's been a Super User for two seasons and is also a Microsoft MVP! He's celebrating his 3rd year being active in the Community--and he's received more than 500 kudos while authoring nearly 300 solutions. Ahmed's contributions to the Super User in Training program has been invaluable, with his most recent session with SUIT highlighting an incredible amount of best practices and tips that have helped him achieve his success. Ahmed's infectious enthusiasm and boundless energy are a key reason why so many Community members appreciate how he brings his personality--and expertise--to every interaction.
