Set control default to value from control in another form

Hi,

I'm creating an app that will allow our users to place orders. There will be a parent child relationship between the OrderInfo and the OrderDetails. I've got OrderInfo opening up when a new item is created and I'm automatically populating a field called OrderID with a GUID. I then provide the users with a button to add as many OrderDetails as they want, one at a time. So each time they select this button a new form is created for them to add an OrderDetail. I want this OrderDetail to contain the GUID that has been populated in the OrderInfo form.

This seems like something that should be easy to do but I cannot find a way of referencing the currently open OrderInfo form and the OrderID control within it that hold my GUID.

Help is greatly appreciated, I'm sure I'm just missing something obvious.

Then take a look into varibles:

Understand variables in PowerApps

Store the GUID of the saved firstly into context variable, then reference the variable for the GUID part.

Make sure you have cleared the Variable after the data has been submitted.

Hi @Anonymous,

I will try to explain my understanding about your scenario:

1. A new item is created,

2. Then OrderInfo for this new item would show up, (in Display form control?)

3. A button to Navigate to the Editform control which would allow users to add OrderDetails for this Orderinfo record

Right?

Here are some questions:

1. What is the OrderID control is, a dropdown control, or a text box?

2. What is your datasource, care to share any details?

3. How would you like to add the new data to OrderDetails, with patch function, or the form control?

For Dropdown control, you should be able to reference its selected data by using:

Dropdown.selected.value

For Text box, refer to its value by: textbox.text

For the form control, see:

Edit form and Display form controls in PowerApps

@v-micsh-msft

Thanks for the reply.

This is my scenario.

Browse Gallery on home screen with ADD icon. User clicks ADD icon to create new Order. User fills in Order information and on the Order screen is another ADD icon that opens the OrderDetails form also in EDIT mode. They can submit the OrderDetails form and the app returns to the still open Orders form for them to continue editing.

I need to create a unique ID that can be shared by both forms so that a relationship can be made between Order and OrderDetails.

I've tried using a hidden text box that was generating a GUID but I could not get this to generate a GUID everytime a new form was created. The app had to be shut down completely. I then tried creating the GUID as a field in the Order form but I could not figure out how to access this GUID from my OrderDetails form. I need to be sure I'm accessing the GUID value, not the forumla for the GUID as this will just generate a different GUID.

I can't use BrowseGallery.Selected as it's a new item. I can't lookup from the datasource as the item has not yet been submitted (and even if it had, I can't be certain that it's the last item that was created).

I tried creating a collection and storing the GUID in here, however I was getting an issue retrieving the GUID as it complained that it was expecting a text record but was getting a record or table. I was using something along the lines of this.

LookUp(colGUID,Last(colGUID),colGUID.Value)

The collection seemed the best choice as it would be cleared down every time a new Order was created, but would be available globally to the app.

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks @v-micsh-msft

On my "New Order" button I've created a variable containing my GUID on select. Then in my Order form I can access this variable successfully.

However, when I then try to do the same on the Order Details screen, I do not see my GUID.

This is my formula for my new Order button

NewForm(EditForm1);Navigate(EditScreen1, ScreenTransition.None, {varGUID:"{" &
    Mid("0123456789ABCDEF", 1 + RoundDown(Rand() * 16, 0), 1) &
    Mid("0123456789ABCDEF", 1 + RoundDown(Rand() * 16, 0), 1) &
    Mid("0123456789ABCDEF", 1 + RoundDown(Rand() * 16, 0), 1) &
    Mid("0123456789ABCDEF", 1 + RoundDown(Rand() * 16, 0), 1) &

    "-" &

Then in the Default property of the ID field for both my forms I'm simply putting varGUID. It works in the Orders screen but not the OrderDetails screen.

Hi @v-micsh-msft

I'm not sure a variable will work as I need the variable to be created in one screen and passed to another.

So when I create my GUID onselect of the New Item, my variable is created and the OrderID datafield uses this variable, however when I click on the New Order Detail button and navigate to another screen that variable is not populating in my ParentID column and if I try to pass the GUID from one variable to another in the OrderDetail screen, it doesn't worked.

I thought that Collections were Global variables so thought this was the best way to do it, if only I could figure out how to pull just the GUID value from the collection. I'm currently trying this

LookUp(colGUID, Last(colGUID), colGUID.Value)

But get the error about expecting text values rather than record or tables.

Turns out, when I was putting in the formula to set a new variable to the value of the existing variable, the error message I was getting was wrong.

When I put the form in preview mode it worked and the error message had gone when I returned to the designer.

Bizarre.
