Patching Radio Button into SharePoint from a set variable

I'm currently trying to patch a radio button into a SharePoint, but am proving to have some difficulties as I don't know how to run multiple 'else-like' functions. I want it to patch only if the column is blank and it has to update the previously selected user. The way it works so far is like so...

You select a staff member for evaluation from a gallery list which navigates to the feedback screen via this code:

Set(varGroupMemEd, ThisItem); Navigate(FeedbackForm)

This is the current code I have in place for the patch:

Patch(
    CharterProjectSP,
    If(
        IsBlank(varGroupMemEd),
        Defaults(CharterProjectSP)
    ),
    {
        Q1a: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
        UserSubmit1: User().Email
    }
);

This code obviously has errors.

Key things I need implemented in the code are:

- I need the code to patch for the selected user

- I need it to patch only if the column doesn't contain data (IsBlank)

- If the column contains data I need it to patch in the next column, rough e.g.:

Patch this:

Q1a: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
UserSubmit1: User().Email

else, patch this:

Q1b: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
UserSubmit2: User().Email

else, patch this:

Q1c: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
UserSubmit3: User().Email

else, patch this:

Q1d: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
UserSubmit4: User().Email

else, patch this:

Q1e: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
UserSubmit5: User().Email

Hopefully that makes sense. Thanks in advance 🙂

Ah yes @WarrenBelz that fixed the LookUp. But I need the patch to include the varGroupMemEd, so it can patch the selected staff member from the previous screen. Because I'm not creating completely new fresh records.

I just read your guide, and I thought I explained it succinctly in my initial post, sincere apologies if it was not clear and concise enough.

But I'm trying to patch data for those blank columns only (Q1x and UserSubmitx) for already existing staff members in the SharePoint. Hence the patch needs to patch respectively the selected staff member from the previous screen.

So how can I include varGroupMemEd into that coding to update the data?

Again I apologise for any miscommunication or misunderstanding and I very much appreciate your help.

@DarkShadows117 ,

You have not mentioned anything about a column with the user's name until now. If you have that column, simply include it in the patches with the Variable as the content.

@WarrenBelz I've attached the image for reference of the main/relevant columns for this.
I have coding in place so only staff members on this list can access the PowerApp and they staff are in groups (column not shown).

Sorry, just a little stumped. But based on the previous filters and the set variable (varGroupMemEd) where/how do I implement it to in the code to patch the selected staff member?

@DarkShadows117 ,

You now have three fields (which I have not seen until now) to patch, so what is in varGroupMemEd ?

Hi @WarrenBelzvarGroupMemEd is a created variable within Power Apps from the previous screen (it's in the initial question of this post).

To summarise it again, I have one screen called SelectGroupMember, and on this screen I have a gallery and when clicking on the arrow of the gallery, it has this coding:

Set(varGroupMemEd, ThisItem); Navigate(FeedbackForm)

So it sets the variable varGroupMemEd and navigates to the FeedbackForm screen. The set variable varGroupMemEd displays the information of that specific staff member being evaluated. For example, something simple like displaying their name:

"Currently Providing Feedback to:   " & varGroupMemEd.FirstName & " " & varGroupMemEd.LastName

So I assume the patch will need to go to this variable to specifically patch the information to this group's staff member?

I hope this information helps. I can provide screenshots of the screens themselves if that'll help in anyway.

@DarkShadows117 ,

We have finally got there (I hope) - using the first bit (you can fill in the rest) - I am assuming the email field name here.

If(
   IsBlank(
      Lookup(
         SPListName,
         UserSubmit1 = User().Email
      )
   ),
   Patch(
      SPListName,
      Defaults(SPListName),
      {
         FirstName: varGroupMemEd.FirstName,
         LastName: varGroupMemEd.LastName,
         EmailAddress: varGroupMemEd.EmailAddress,
         Q1a: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
         UserSubmit1: User().Email
      }
   ),

Hi @WarrenBelz, yes we're so very close, but this still isn't the right code. It's creating new data and duplicating the user's names by patching a new first name, last name and email address (when this data already exists in the database as can be seen in my example image - message 23/26).

Because all of the staff names exist in the data base, I need it to update their records accordingly, not create new records. So, I don't want the defaults to create a new record, I need to update the existing names Q1x and UserSubmitx.

@DarkShadows117 ,

You have said from almost the start these are new records, so that is what I provided. Unfortunately, we are now 28 posts into a thread (and counting) and to be honest I now still do not fully understand what you need, so rather than me continually providing code that is not achieving the outcome you require, please attempt some code using what I have provided to at least put the logic in some structure.

Hi @WarrenBelz
I troubleshooted and got it working. Thanks a million!!! I really do appreciate your time and effort and I do apologise for making this more difficult than it should have been.

This is how I got it working:

I had to set up this code for my radio button default (to link it with my set variable from the previous screen):

varGroupMemEd.Q1a || varGroupMemEd.Q1b || varGroupMemEd.Q1c || varGroupMemEd.Q1d || varGroupMemEd.Q1e

I then updated my patch function to include an extra if statement like so:

If(
    IsBlank(
        LookUp(
            CharterProjectSP,
            UserSubmit1 = User().Email
        )
    ),
    Patch(
        CharterProjectSP,
        If(IsBlank(varGroupMemEd),
        Defaults(CharterProjectSP), varGroupMemEd),
        {
            Q1a: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
            UserSubmit1: User().Email
        }
    ),
    IsBlank(
        LookUp(
            CharterProjectSP,
            UserSubmit2 = User().Email
        )
    ),
    Patch(
        CharterProjectSP,
        If(IsBlank(varGroupMemEd),
        Defaults(CharterProjectSP), varGroupMemEd),
        {
            Q1b: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
            UserSubmit2: User().Email
        }
    ),
    IsBlank(
        LookUp(
            CharterProjectSP,
            UserSubmit3 = User().Email
        )
    ),
    Patch(
        CharterProjectSP,
        If(IsBlank(varGroupMemEd),
        Defaults(CharterProjectSP), varGroupMemEd),
        {
            Q1c: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
            UserSubmit3: User().Email
        }
    ),
    IsBlank(
        LookUp(
            CharterProjectSP,
            UserSubmit4 = User().Email
        )
    ),
    Patch(
        CharterProjectSP,
        If(IsBlank(varGroupMemEd),
        Defaults(CharterProjectSP), varGroupMemEd),
        {
            Q1d: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
            UserSubmit4: User().Email
        }
    ),
    IsBlank(
        LookUp(
            CharterProjectSP,
            UserSubmit5 = User().Email
        )
    ),
    Patch(
        CharterProjectSP,
        If(IsBlank(varGroupMemEd),
        Defaults(CharterProjectSP), varGroupMemEd),
        {
            Q1e: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
            UserSubmit5: User().Email
        }
    )
);

My only 1 issue is that it patches the data strangely (refer to image PatchError). Despite their being a blank Q1a column for the next person, the 2nd patch goes to q1b, 3rd patch to q1c, 4th patch to q1d and 5th patch to q1e. How can I get it to patch to Q1a each time and only then patch q1b if q1a has already been patched, then patch q1c if both q1a & q1b have been patched?

@DarkShadows117 ,

I am assuming that is because varGroupMemEd is not matching the record you are wanting to patch to. If the ID of the desired record is in this Variable, you could try

Patch(
   CharterProjectSP,
   If(
      IsBlank(varGroupMemEd.ID),
      Defaults(CharterProjectSP),
      {ID: varGroupMemEd.ID}
   ),
   {
      Q1a: Q1Radio.Selected.Value,
      UserSubmit1: User().Email
   }
),
