How to connect an app to dataverse for teams instead of sharepoint

Hi everyone ! Not sure where to post this question honestly, I hope here is okay !

I'm building an app using sharepoint lists, but I want to change this and use dataverse for teams instead to overcome some delegation issues I'm encountering. But I have no idea how to do that properly.

I can't connect to datarverse for teams from my current editor (make.powerapps....), the only way I can do that is from the team powerapps builder

Moving the data is not a problem as the tables aren't filled yet. But moving the app isn't easy so far. I've tride to copy/paste elements of a screen but it seems the size of the canvas isn't the same in the teams editor so I'd have to ajust everything manually and that would take a lot of time.

So before doing this I would lie to know if there's a way i can export my app to the teams powerapps editor properly.

Thanks in advance for any answer you could provide me !

Have a good day !

Hi @Anonymous,

Solutions are the mechanism to move customizations between environments. You can move your customizations from Dataverse to Dataverse for Teams as well. You just need to be aware of the limitations of customizations that can be imported into Dataverse teams. The link provides these details.

Hello @Anonymous,

You should be able to export the app from your non-teams environment in a solution and then import it into your teams environment. You can find more information on solutions here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/data-platform/solutions-overview

Importing your app in Dataverse for Teams is a bit tricky. I use the PowerApps app in Teams to do this.

In the PowerApps app, click on the "Build" tab:

Next, select the environment you want to add your app to.

You should see all the items created in this environment on the right:

When you click on "See all", you will end up on a screen similar to this:

However, building an app within Teams is using a reduced user interface compared to the "normal" Power Apps Studio. So you might run into some issues when you're trying to replace your SharePoint data source with the Team's Dataverse.

Hi @ChrisPiasecki  !

Thak you for your quick answer, it was quite useful !

I'm faced with an issue regarding customization though, as you saif could happen. I haven't found in the doc you shared what is causing the issue precisely, nor how to solve it.

I've got this error message :

"The solution file is invalid. The compressed file must contain the following files at its root: solution.xml, customizations.xml, and [Content_Types].xml. Customization files exported from previous versions of Microsoft Dynamics 365 are not supported."

If you or someone else were able to enlighten me a bit I would appreciate it greatly !

Hi @Anonymous,

It's most likely a Dataverse database version mismatch, where your Dataverse environment is on a newer version than your Teams Dataverse. You can import a solution built on an older version into a new version, but not the other way around.

Is your Dataverse environment in a different region than your Teams environment is? Updates are rolled out in a staggered way "stations", where each station has a number of regions in it. Updates are usually a week in between but they can be pushed anytime.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/released-versions/powerapps

You can view the Database version for an environment in the Power Platform Admin Center under Environments, then open up the environment.

I think you can also receive this error when you're trying to import an exported app instead of an exported solution - could you check this too, @Anonymous?

Edit : I hadn't seen your first answer, I'm gonna try and do that

Original message :

I have indead exported an application and not a solution.

It's not really clear to me what solutions are in powerapps, and my app isn't part of a solution as far as I knowso I don't think I could export it as a solution.

Is it not possible to export just an app ?

Hello @Anonymous,

Yes, it is possible to add an existing app into a solution 🙂

Hi @Anonymous,

While apps and flows can be exported and imported separately, it makes it challenging to manage change and deploy a set of dependant components as one unit. Solutions are the mechanism to group together, export and import your Apps, Flows, Bots, and Dataverse components such as Tables, Views, Columns, Dataflows, etc.

Unless your app is relatively self contained and simple (e.g. Connected to a SharePoint list) and not using Dataverse, then I would strongly recommend using Solutions. Do note though that if you're creating your solutions in a regular Dataverse environment outside of Teams, then you will need a Power Apps premium license (e.g. Per user license).
